Message from our
Chief Executive Officer

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to share that our new flagship hotel, Mercure ICON Singapore City Centre, has created a buzz in the hotel industry as it attracts considerable publicity from local and international media.

In May 2024, we were privileged to host Raini Hamdi, a renowned award-winning travel trade journalist, at the hotel. Her comprehensive article applauds our hotel's “lean luxe” concept. It brings indispensable luxuries — such as rain showers and Nespresso machines — at a reasonable price point, setting a new standard as it redefines the mid-tier hotel market. Furthermore, Raini's commendation of the efficient spatial design, exemplified by the storage solution beneath the raised beds, encapsulates what Mercure ICON Singapore City Centre strives to achieve for our guests.

I encourage you to read her article on her stay experience at Mercure ICON Singapore City Centre on this link.

Thank you for your dedication and hard work. Your contributions have been invaluable in our journey towards excellence. Let’s continue to embrace upcoming opportunities together to achieve remarkable milestones.

Warm Regards,

Carolyn Choo

Name Details

Mr. Aden Aden is highly regarded for his exceptional teamwork and hands-on approach, setting an excellent example for his colleagues. He goes above and beyond to ensure every staff member feels valued, celebrating birthdays and providing treats from his pocket. His efforts have contributed to V Hotel Bencoolen's low staff turnover rate.

Recently, when faced with an SCDF inspection and penalties for non-conformances in designated areas, Aden took charge. He arrived at 6 am, devised a plan, and personally led the team to clear the areas. Despite suffering cuts and bruises, Aden's dedication and leadership ensured that all areas were cleared by 4 pm, showcasing the spirit of Team VBN. With his positive attitude and commitment, Aden will have a bright future as an EHK at VBN.

Ms. Marissa Marissa, our SFOE, demonstrated exceptional care and quick thinking when an in-house guest reported his father was having breathing difficulties. She promptly called for an ambulance and rushed to the guest's room. Upon arrival, she discovered the guest was not breathing and immediately began CPR. Marissa, a Qualified First Aid at Hotel 81 Dickson, continued CPR for over 10 minutes until paramedics arrived at 0702hrs and took over. Her swift actions and life-saving efforts exemplify our commitment to guest safety and well-being.

Ms. Nina Nina is recognised for her outstanding service orientation and commitment, as evidenced by numerous online reviews praising her positive attitude and warm smile. She goes above and beyond, often buying lollipops and sweets for children with her own money, earning her high praise. Nina's exceptional communication skills, particularly with returning and Indonesian guests, make her a favourite among guests. Her dedication and genuine care for guests truly set her apart.

Mr. Amirul He's recognised for his reliability, friendliness, cooperativeness, perceptiveness, and joyfulness. He always arrives with a jovial attitude and is a pleasure to work with. He's considerate towards guests, going the extra mile to assist them.

Once, a mother sought a last-minute packed breakfast for her unwell son. Instead of turning her away, he escorted her to the restaurant, arranged packed breakfasts for their stay, and provided information on nearby clinics and hospitals.

In another instance, he assisted a guest with luggage and escorted them to their room when no GSOs were available.

His commitment to guest satisfaction is commendable in his attention to grooming, rapport with team members, and positive mentions on TripAdvisor.

Mr. Wilson He won the award for his exceptional dedication and hard work, including assisting with heavy trash and linen duties, working overtime on busy days, and shortening his hospital leave to return to work. Guests highly regard him; he has four TripAdvisor compliments, and his colleagues respect him.

Getting To Know Your Neighbourhood
Chinatown

Our colleague, Jimmy Cheng, has gone around Chinatown to show us some hidden gems but first, did you know?...

Chinatown is an estate located largely in the Outram area in the Central Region of Singapore. In his 1822 master Town Plan, Sir Stamford Raffles allocated the whole area west of the Singapore River for a Chinese settlement known as the Chinese Campong (kampong in Malay means “village”), envisaging that the Chinese would form the bulk of future town dwellers. Singapore, the new land of opportunity then, had attracted many immigrants from China, who expanded the original boundaries of this economically and culturally vibrant, self-contained town.

Today, Chinatown is Singapore’s largest Historic District, and an important and unique ethnic quarter Singaporeans fondly call “our Chinatown”.

Now, let’s move on to some hidden gems in Chinatown itself!

1. Sri Layan Sithi Vinayagar Temple
2. Masjid Jamae (Chulia)
3. Chinatown Street Market
4. Lau Pa Sat
5. Potato Head Singapore
6. Hawker Chan
7. Tongue Tip Lanzhou Beef Noodles (Halal)
8. The Wizard's Brew

5 Eye Care Tips

Eye care is a particularly important healthy habit, particularly given the high exposure to screens in modern society. Following these simple habits can help you keep your eyes healthy for longer.

Tip #1
Lubricate Your Eyes

Staring at screens and other factors can cause dry eyes, leading to eye strain. This condition may result from low tear production or poor tear quality. Apply eye drops to keep your eyes properly lubricated.

Tip #2
Don't Strain Your Eyesight

Always try to read in good light, preferably natural light.

Tip #3
Stop Rubbing Your Eyes

Avoid rubbing your eyes when they are itchy or tired, as this can increase discomfort and cause injury. Rest your eyes whenever possible.

Tip #4
Be Mindful of What You Eat

A healthy diet helps prevent many diseases. Nutrients like vitamins C and E, zinc, lutein, and omega-3s can prevent eye diseases. Find these in oily fish, seafood, seeds, nuts, fruits, and vegetables.

Tip #5
Keep Your Glasses And Contact Lenses in Good Condition

Glasses and contact lenses are indispensable everyday tools. Keep them clean and in a good condition, as damaged glasses will force you to strain your sight.
