Worldwide Hotels

Message from our
Chief Executive Officer

Dear Colleagues,

I was extremely concerned and worried when many of our team members were down with Covid in the past 3 months. Fortunately, those infected had mild or no symptoms and have recovered very well. I am especially heartened by the teamwork, empathy, and support most of us have displayed. Also, my heartfelt thanks to many colleagues who have sacrificed their off days and help to hold the fort when the manpower situation was very tight. Although the next few months continue to be challenging, I am sure we can emerge stronger sooner if we all stay resilient and united as a team.

Thank you all for your contributions and I am grateful for your support.

Warm Regards,

Carolyn Choo

Ms. Felicia Felicia has displayed great initiative & interest in exploring various methods to improve the workflow on processing online payments. She has suggested using a free software called PDF merger & splitter to merge all invoices together with the supporting documents (eg quotations, contracts, purchase order, delivery order, etc) into a file. This helps to improve online payment efficiency greatly. Felicia is also always ready to extend a helping hand to her colleagues whenever help is required.
Ms. Salma Salma is a dedicated employee who has shown exemplary customer service skills. In addition, under the current operation as Community Isolation Facility, knowing that we must strictly follow the safety protocol, he would proactively feedback to the managers when finding any areas for improvement. We are pleased to acknowledge and appreciate his great contribution to the back of the house.
Mr. Hemon Hemon has been replacing fuse lights along the exterior walkway and washing the covers even though this is beyond his scope of duties. Staff on Secondment

In 2020 & 2021, a few HQ colleagues were attached to hotels contracted to Singapore Land Authority to support its operation. This secondment is an eye-opening experience and has equipped them with additional skills and better understanding of the workflow and challenges faced by our Ops Team. We spoke to three of them; Ms Maria from HQ Accounts, Ms Elvina & Mr Gino from HQ Reservations.

What were your thoughts when you were first informed of the secondment?
Elvina: Frightened! Heard about the tasks that must be done and is concerned that the scope is beyond me.

Mariah: Upset! But I told myself to give it a try to understand what’s happening on the ground.

Gino: Keen to know more colleagues at the hotel and the various aspects of hotel operation.

What are your concerns and how do you adapt?
Elvina: At Hotel Mi, I am very much assured after receiving a warm welcome from GM Mr Kusaka and Mr Kenny Goh. They quickly integrate me into their team and whenever the workload gets heavy, they will deploy additional help.

Mariah: My initial concerns were whether the hotels can accept me. I was initially deployed to VHB and then to HMI. Both hotels made me feel comfortable and at ease. Mr Gwee and Ms Michelle were strict with room hygiene and safety protocols. This puts me at ease as procedures must be strictly followed.

Gino: I had initial safety concerns as VLV was then serving as a Stay Home Notice Dedicated Facility and if I could contribute to a team which I am unfamiliar with. I soon learnt that they were highly organised and close-knitted, with team members assisting each other where needed.

What are your afterthoughts now that you have completed your secondment?
Elvina: I am happy to have learnt new stuff and had an enjoyable experience.

Mariah: It was a very good experience. There is a strong teamwork amongst our colleagues towards a common goal. I really miss them.

Gino: In hindsight, it was a good thing. With the experience gained, I learnt to be adaptable as instructions were fluid considering there were constant changes to STB or MOH requirements/guidelines.

What interesting fact about yourself that most of your colleagues are not aware of?
I am good with musical instruments, especially guitar and drums. I've been learning music since I was 7 years of age. The rhythms and rhymes, definitely a fantastic universal language.

Please share 1 proudest moment or memory?
One particular point would be when I joined Hotel 81 as my first job back in 2007. I witnessed how the company is expanding. Having the opportunity to work with many cheerful and helpful fellow colleagues in the company. I find that this experience has helped me understand other cultures and appreciate differences.

I started as a Room Attendant at 81 Chinatown. I always strive to do better. I feel so glad given countless opportunities and trust to develop my skills in this company, along with great managers, special mention goes to Madam Diong, Mr Patrick Tay, Mr Afiq Yong, who’ve been there and being part of my career achievements today.

Who do you admire most and why?
My grandfather is one of the most incredible people. He was an honest, fair and a very disciplined person. He had taught me several lifelong lessons. He was a self-made man and narrates his story of hard work and bringing family together.

What drives you / what motivates you?
A positive environment, working well with all teams, and opportunity to acquire new skills and development in hotel management. I also always wanted to ensure that customers get the best experience. I feel it’s important, both to me personally for my growth, and for the company to continue to achieve greater success.

    Your hobbies?
I enjoy cycling, swimming, listening to good music, discovering new places, and strolling around town with my wife. Yes walking, sure it is! With so many health benefits, while absorbing the atmosphere.

What interesting fact about yourself that most of your colleagues are not aware of?
I am a spendthrift, but I worked hard and did not rely on anyone. I have a huge collection of perfume as I am a perfume lover, and I will continue to buy more in future. I was born in a mixed culture family with different religions. My parents are Indonesian, but my mom is Indonesian Chinese freethinker, and my dad is Indonesian Muslim. My siblings are Christians and myself Catholic, so I celebrate Hari Raya, Christmas and Chinese New Year.

Please share 1 proudest moment or memory?
I am proud of myself. At a very young age, with limited skills and knowledge, I left my country to work. I made a lot of friends along the way, and I once met a Japanese guest who was a writer for a traveling magazine. After she left, she sent me a copy of a magazine which featured me!

Who do you admire most and why?
I admire my parents. They taught me to be good, patient, and helpful. Though I felt guilty for leaving them to work abroad, they have always supported and loved me. The other person is Ms. Diong Pei Ling. She is my mentor, best friend, and I like the way she makes her job the priority. She thinks positively and works diligently. I first met her when she was a hotel manager at Hotel 81 Chinatown in 2010, and we have become close since. I am very inspired by her perseverance, and we always make time for gatherings.

What drives you / what motivates you?
My colleagues at Hotel 81 are my prime motivation. I was accepted to join Hotel 81 in 2010. I then resigned and rejoined in 2012. I am very grateful because Hotel 81 accepts me for who I am, and I have worked for almost 10 years. The bonding between me and my colleagues at Hotel 81 motivates me to work. My colleagues are like my family.

    Your hobbies?
My hobby is exercising and besides running I like yoga, swimming, playing badminton and hiking. Maybe next time you want to join me? Please don’t hesitate to contact me! 🤗

    Hotel 81 Premier Star

When did Hotel 81 Premier Star started its operations?
Hotel 81 Premier Star started operations in 1st January 2000.

Explain what our colleagues do daily at the Hotel?
    • Front Office
When you hear Front Office, the first thing that comes to mind is someone who checks in and checks out guests. However, at Hotel 81 Premier Star, our colleagues at Front Office undertake multiple roles, in and out of the counter. While they are well-trained in serving guests, they also assist with housekeeping roles when our Housekeeping colleagues are engaged with other duties, especially during this pandemic.

Unlike the bigger hotels, we do not have the luxury of having multiple departments, hence we are always there to cover for one another whenever possible.

    • Housekeeping
Our Housekeeping colleagues are well-trained to ensure that the standard of cleanliness is up to expectation. Besides ensuring that all guestrooms are cleaned for the comfort of the guest, they are also trained to handle the various uses of cleaning chemicals. They are also required to assist with OIC (One Item Check), such as defects, aircon filter cleaning etc. At times, they are deployed at the sister's branch whenever there is a shortage of manpower.

What did you or your colleagues do to ensure that guest satisfaction or needs are met?
We try to ensure that all requests are met before the guest's arrival. We take all feedback and complaints seriously and try our best to improve our customer service. We welcome everyone with a smile.

Getting To Know Your Neighbourhood - Geylang

Our colleagues, Patrick & Sarinah, has gone round Geylang to show us some hidden gems but first, did you know?...

The word Geylang is found early in Singapore's history and also in early topographical maps showing marsh and coconut plantations beside and adjacent to the mouth of the Kallang River, home to the Orang Laut (sea gypsies) called orang biduanda kallang who inhabited the area at the time of Raffles' arrival in 1819, and after whom the river is named.

Geylang is also where one of Singapore's oldest Malay settlements, Geylang Serai, is located.

Today, you could spend days just soaking in the vibe of this buzzing district.

Now, let’s move on to some hidden gems found within Geylang itself!

    1. Geylang Serai
    2. Foo Hai Ch'an Monastery
    3. Sri Sivan Temple
    4. Tai Dong Teochew Duck Rice
    5. Green Chilli Chicken Rice (Halal)

    Local Places of Interest
    Southern Islands

Thinking of what to do this weekend? If you prefer to go for activities with lesser crowds, an island-hopping adventure is the perfect weekend activity to embark on!

    Getting there
Both Marina South Ferries and Singapore Island Cruise and Ferry Services ply the waters between the mainland and the Southern Islands. A $15 two-way ticket typically gets you from Marina South Pier to St John's Island (joined to Lazarus Island by a causeway), as well as Kusu Island. Marina South Ferries also stops at Big Sister's Island (one of the two Sisters' Islands, currently closed). It takes about 30 minutes to get to these Southern Islands from the mainland.

It is best to book your tickets online as they sometimes sell out.

For a more flexible itinerary, you can charter a boat and get up close to other Southern Islands such as Pulau Hantu (Island of Ghosts), which is popular with divers. Be careful while swimming and walking around rocky areas.

    What To Bring?
Take along your own water bottles and packed meals. Sunscreen, insect repellent, tissues, ground sheets and plastic bags for your trash will also come in handy. Do not feed the wild monkeys. The ones at Big Sister's Island are known to be aggressive, so give them a wide berth and don't leave your belongings unattended.

What To Do At Southern Island?
Kusu Island: Visit popular Chinese temple, tortoise sanctuary, climb 152 steps at the shrines, picnic tables and BBQ pits

Lazarus Island: Lounge at the white sandy shores and clear waters, water activities

Sisters' Island (closed till March 2024): Snorkelling, intertidal walk, diving

St John's Island: St John's Island's trail, DIY nature walk, National Marine Lab gallery, fishing, camping (NA due to COVID-19), cycle to connecting islands (Lazarus Island and Seringat Island)
