Dear Colleagues,
I am excited to share that we have enhanced the newsletter to include more interesting content, access to view the newsletter through more platforms and the translation to Mandarin, as well as, Malay.
This key communications milestone is made possible by taking on some of the feedback that you have shared in the WWH Core Values Survey conducted last November, to which I
was heartened to see more than 80% of the respondents express either ‘Agree’ or ‘Strongly Agree’ in the overwhelming 477 responses submitted.
Thank you all for the encouragement and I look forward to your continued support.
Warm Regards,
Carolyn Choo
Chief Executive Officer |

What interesting fact about yourself that most of your colleagues are not aware of?
Adventurous activities such as bungee jumping, sea kayaking and hot air ballooning.
Please share 1 proudest moment or memory?
Took a leap out of my comfort zone and recently completed a computing language course (Python) to apply in my scope of work.
Who is the person you admire most?
I would say it would be the late Mr. Lee Kuan Yew for his determination, strength of convictions and his clarity of views.
Are you a Team player? How?
Outside of Revenue Management & Distribution my focus has been to collaborate closely with our colleagues to achieve company initiatives and implement them effectively.
What is your favourite hobby / food / singer / movie
Happily for me, my wife is an outstanding chef so anything she creates is a pleasure.

Hotel Manager - Hotel 81 Sakura
1983 Sea Games Gold Medalist (Weightlifting)
1986 Commonwealth Games Bronze Medalist (Weightlifting)
1987, 1989, 1991 Sea Games Silver & Bronze Medalist respectively (Weightlifting)
What inspires you to take up this sport?
My dad, who used to run a gym at the backyard of our house, encouraged me to take up weightlifting instead of bodybuilding.
Share with us your journey?
I started weightlifting at 14 where I’d use wooden poles as weights in order to master the ‘Snatch’ and ‘Clean & Jerk’ techniques. These were the 2 competition lifts. My training schedule would see me 4 times a week training at the Sennett Estate community centre in Macpherson.
My first win where I clinched third place in the World Youth Weightlifting Championships held in Manila, Philippines, really fueled my hunger to want to ultimately aim for a gold medal. In 1983, I was selected to represent Singapore in the SEA Games and walked away with a gold medal despite being in the lighter weight class. Subsequently, I also took third place in the 1986 Commonwealth Games held in Edinburgh, Scotland.
How would you inspire/encourage others?
My recipe for success - Dedication, Discipline and Hard Work.

Getting To Know Your Neighbourhood - Joo Chiat
Our colleague, Kenneth Seah, has gone round Joo Chiat to show us some hidden gems but first, did you know?...
Joo Chiat was once filled with coconut plantations and was a popular weekend retreat for wealthy city dwellers. By the early 20th century, Katong area developed into a residential suburb with a growing English-educated middle class of Peranakans and Eurasians.
The name ‘Joo Chiat’ was taken from Chew Joo Chiat, a wealthy Chinese landowner, who lived in the early 20th century. The area’s signature lies in its pre-war architecture, colourful two-storey shophouses, terrace houses with ornate facades, intricate motifs and ceramic tiles.
Now, let’s move on to some ‘edible’ hidden gems found within Joo Chiat itself!

Annual Performance Review
Our Annual Performance Review for 2020 was conducted over 2 weeks in December for all employees across different business units. The aim of this exercise is to objectively evaluate the work performance, identify strengths and areas for improvement in our employees and teams.
This year, the Annual Performance Review gives emphasis to the established Core Values; Commitment, Integrity, Teamwork, Respect and Accountability.
The results of this Annual Performance Review will aid the Management in its business strategy planning for 2021 and beyond.
Congratulations to all who have done well in 2020. And for others with areas to work on, let’s forge ahead to bridge the performance gaps with confidence.

Flu vaccination at Hotel Laundry
Per MOM’s requirements, all migrant workers in the construction, marine or process sectors who are residing in dormitories or in the community, are required to be vaccinated in order to reduce the risk of them catching / spreading the flu bug around.
On 4 Dec, 25 of our colleagues at Hotel Laundry who are residing in our staff dormitory have received their one-time flu vaccination and this was made possible by AcuMed Medical Group’s team that were on-site to administer the vaccinations.
Last but not least, special thanks to our Laundry Operations Manager, Mr Daniel Sim, who assisted with the arrangement, complying with MOM requirements and in doing so, ensured that Hotel Laundry staff are safe, well and healthy for work.

Achieve Mental Wellness When Dealing with Change |
Tip #1 |
Change is Inevitable, Don’t Take It Personally
Change happens. That’s life. It’s got nothing to do with you. Don’t obsess over who’s to blame or why it happened.
Tip #2 |
Embrace Change by Going with the Flow
Don’t resist or be too rigid. Be flexible, ride out the storm, and see how things turn out.
Tip #3 |
Focus on the Positive Aspects of Change
If you keep looking at the bad side of things, you might miss the good. The glass is also half full, remember? |
Tip #4 |
Making Better Decisions
With new experiences, we grow wiser and stronger. Wisdom helps us make better decisions in future. |
Tip #5 |
The New Circumstances Will Eventually Become Familiar
No matter how big or difficult, change comes to an end when the new circumstances are in place and become familiar. Normality will return. Keep this in mind.
