Message from our
Chief Executive Officer

Dear Colleagues,

As we enter the second quarter of 2025, I am delighted to reflect on our incredible journey together and share some exciting updates.

Our recent Dinner & Dance event, held over two enchanting evenings on 8 and 16 April, was truly memorable. Watching colleagues transform into beloved Disney characters filled the nights with joy, laughter, and camaraderie. A particular highlight was the heartwarming and humorous performance video, creatively reenacting a classic Disney love story. Thank you all for embracing the theme with such enthusiasm and imagination. Your creativity and team spirit genuinely captured the essence of Worldwide Hotels.

We have embarked on an important journey toward achieving the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) certification for several of our hotels, including Hotel Boss, V Hotel Lavender, V Hotel Bencoolen, Hotel Mi Rochor, Hotel Mi Bencoolen, Mercure ICON Singapore City Centre, and Novotel Singapore on Kitchener. This initiative supports the Singapore Tourism Board’s Sustainability Roadmap to certify 60% of Singapore’s hotel room inventory by 2025. Achieving GSTC certification demonstrates our deep commitment to sustainability, environmental responsibility, and delivering meaningful experiences to our guests. This effort requires close collaboration across multiple departments, including Asset Management, Human Resources, Marketing Communications, Sales, Operations, and the hotel general managers. I appreciate your dedication as we take this vital step forward.

I am also encouraged by the strong participation in our R.E.A.L. (Respect, Equality, Authenticity, & Listening) framework sessions. Your engagement in these sessions significantly fosters a vibrant employee culture and strengthens our shared purpose through accountability and recognition.

Our ongoing success is driven by our core purpose—“Fulfilling the Aspirations of Our Traveller,” which underscores our dedication to offering quality, affordable accommodations. Travel should be accessible to everyone, and we remain committed to inspiring business and leisure guests to explore the vibrant city of Singapore.

Thank you once again for your unwavering dedication and outstanding contributions. Together, we will continue reaching new milestones and building a successful and sustainable future.

Warm Regards,

Carolyn Choo

UP CLOSE WITH...

Worldwide Hotels boasts a community of employees who hail from all walks of life. Other than being passionate about hospitality, our people have diverse interests and pursuits outside work. Let’s bring the spotlight to…

Norman Cross

General Manager - Mercure ICON Singapore City Centre

What interesting fact about yourself that most of your colleagues are not aware of?
My journey into hospitality happened purely by chance. Growing up, I was always intrigued by consumer retail and FMCG businesses, largely shaped by my late father’s career, which centred around supermarkets. My first job was as a deli butcher in one of the supermarket chains.

Please share one proudest moment or memory?
I will share two. Firstly, being the valedictorian of my graduating class at university among an international cohort of students and delivering the graduation speech was unforgettable. It made my parents immensely proud and gave me the determination to continue succeeding in this industry ahead of my peers.

Secondly, ACI HR recently honoured me with the APAC Highly Commendable Mentor of the Year 2024 award. Receiving such recognition through a peer industry nomination was genuinely humbling, as it affirmed that I have positively influenced the development and coaching of many professionals who have progressed in their careers. Their words of encouragement inspire me to continue contributing to the industry’s professional growth.

Whom do you admire most and why?
Peter Drucker. The management consultant who coined the term – ‘Culture eats strategy for breakfast’ has been my guiding principle in my career from the onset. His principles of leadership and drive for efficiency and accountability are my driving force.

What drives you / what motivates you?
Efficiency, accountability, responsibility, and ownership drive me. Autonomy, responsibility, and ownership motivate me.

Your hobbies?
Cooking, travelling, hiking, and taking trail walks with my AirPods on!

Up Close With...
Yan Yan Oon

Senior Finance Manager, Operations Finance - HQ

What interesting fact about yourself that most of your colleagues are not aware of?
I have a bit of a stationery obsession – I love collecting pens, papers, tapes, etc. I am caffeine intolerant, specifically coffee. I can only drink Chinese tea, and I enjoy drinking it.

Please share one proudest moment or memory?
I am proud of completing my thesis and earning my degree while working. Choosing a subject that differed from my peers was a challenge, but stepping out of my comfort zone and finishing it was truly rewarding.

Whom do you admire most and why?
My dad. He is loving, kind, patient, and wise. He is someone I have looked up to since I was young. He was an accounting teacher, and his influence probably led me to study accounting.

What drives you / what motivates you?
Kind words of encouragement motivate me.

Your hobbies?
I love travelling to explore nature and small towns (Definitely not a city person). I also enjoy making personalised cards for my family and friends.
