Diong Pei Ling

General Manager – Hotel Operations (81-Cluster)
Note: Some photos are taken prior to COVID-19

What interesting fact about yourself that most of your colleagues are not aware of?
I enjoy cooking for my family and spending time with my little one. My kitchen is my domain! I love spending time in my kitchen and whipping up some really tasty dishes for my family and for my colleagues.

Please share 1 proudest moment or memory?
My journey with the Group started back in 1999 where I joined as a Junior Executive at Hotel 81 Star.

As a rookie with no prior experience within the Hospitality sector, I was given myriad of opportunities to develop good leadership as well as hotel management skills.

I had the opportunity to work with our Boss Mr Choo and our COO, Mr Chu Poh Yong where I got to understand and learn more about our hotel operations and our business.

I’ve worked hard and I strived to do better in what I do. I was gradually promoted to assume the roles of an Assistant Hotel Manager, Hotel Manager, Area Manager and the role of General Manager of the 81 cluster.

Who is the person you admire most?
My dad was the one person who inspired me towards a more fulfilling career in Singapore. Needless to say, he is the person that I admire most!

What motivates me?
Family. I would like to be able to provide for my family and to go on annual family trips with them without having them to worry about cost and expenses; while continuing to strive for improvement & excellence at work and to work hard for the company and for my loved ones.

What inspires you to change your lifestyle?
I was at my heaviest in 2016 and had experienced my weight going up and down for years. I’d eventually come to my senses on changing my lifestyle once and for all by making many informed decisions, peppered with bravery.

Do you workout at home or at a gym?
I am at the gym 5 – 6 days a week and if I am unable to go, I’d ensure I get my workouts done at home.

What is your best piece of advice for those are keen to step out of their comfort zone and to kick start their fitness journey like what you did?
My advice will be to set realistic goals as it may take time to see the results. It is definitely vital to breakdown those goals to small actionable steps to ensure you stay motivated every step of the way!

What motivates you to continue with this lifestyle?
I feel more energised and definitely more confident about myself. With better agility and a higher level of fitness today, it is wonderful to see others making an effort to change themselves after seeing my transformation.

Getting To Know Your Neighbourhood - Lavender

Note: Some photos are taken prior to COVID-19

Our colleague, Resley Ang, has gone round Lavender to show us some hidden gems but first, did you know?...

Lavender Street connects the junction of Balestier Road and Serangoon Road to the junction of Kallang Road and Crawford Street.

There are several accounts pertaining to the origin of the street name. According to one account, the area was covered with Chinese vegetable gardens and the whole place smelled of a pungent odour from the nightsoil that was used as plant fertiliser. Some believe that an old town gasworks located at the junction of Lavender Street and Kallang Road emitted an odorous gas. The residents thus named the street with that tongue-in-cheek reference, and the municipality accepted the suggestion in 1858.

Now, let’s move on to some hidden gems found within Lavender itself!

1. Nasi Ambeng Nenek Leng (Halal)
2. Chye Seng Huat Hardware
3. Swee Choon Tim Sum Restaurant
4. The Tiramisu Hero
5. Jalan Besar Stadium

Annual Business Strategic Meeting 2021

WWH held its first Annual Business Strategic Meeting on Thursday, 21 January 2021, at Hotel Boss.

The full-day meeting, attended by the leadership team, focused on reviewing current business strategies, formulating and implementing new business ideas for the Group, based off of the SWOT Analysis which, highlighted appropriate areas of strengths, weaknesses, new opportunities and threats.

The team took time to review the Key Risk Areas as well; highlighting areas of risks across all business functions to allow for early intervention and mitigation of any possible impact brought on by the risks identified. This exercise will allow the Group to emerge stronger as it prepares for business to return to normalcy.

Hari Raya Aidilfitri

The festival of Eid, known in Singapore as Hari Raya Aidilfitri or Hari Raya Puasa, falls on the first day of Syawal, the 10th month of the Hijrah (Islamic) calendar. It is a celebratory occasion following a month of fasting, which is known as Ramadan. The term hari raya is Malay for “big (or grand) day of rejoicing”.

Don’t forget to observe social distancing at all times when you are out visiting family and friends.

Here is to wishing you and your loved ones, Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2021 in advance. Take care and stay safe.

Lifestyle

Exercise Can Improve Your Mental Health

Tip #1
Boosts Your Mood

Regular exercisers are quick to point out the boost in energy and mood that comes after physical activity (sometimes called the runner’s high).

Tip #2
Keeps the Brain Sharp

When stuck at work or struggling to make a decision, your best bet may be to fit in some exercise. Many studies suggest exercise improves brain function almost immediately and the positive effects can make a big difference in the long-run.

Tip #3
Improves Memory

From spelling and vocabulary tests to recalling names, memory is a major part of life from elementary school through adulthood and research suggests that exercise can help with recall.

Tip #4
Helps Creativity

If you’re having trouble thinking “outside the box” a tough run or strength training session might just be the answer to your creativity block.

Tip #5
Reduces Stress

The Mental Health Foundation recommends exercise as a way to relieve tension, stress and mental fatigue and others sources agree.

Working Out At Home

Start small & track your progress. Starting small means focusing on short term goals first. Focus on one week at a time. Get in your workout for the day. Then complete the next workout. Make it a challenge to find that 5-25 minutes in your day, as often as possible, to just get more active.
