Dear Colleagues,

Singapore’s tourism recovery has accelerated, with 1 million visitors in March. Despite the high-interest rates environment and concerns of a looming recession, I am optimistic that with all our hard work, our Group will do well this year.

We have many new colleagues joining us recently, and I want to thank all managers and seniors who have contributed and helped to onboard them with teamwork and respect.

I am excited and looking forward to having a great time with all of you during our upcoming Staff Dinner and Dance. Do come dressed at your best, and Cheers!

Warm Regards,

Interesting Fact

Getting To Know Your Neighbourhood - Bencoolen

Our colleague, Kusaka, has gone around Bencoolen to show us some hidden gems but first, did you know?...

Bencoolen Street was named in remembrance of Raffles’s sojourn in Bencoolen (of Sumatra) as Lieutenant-General. The street also took its name from Kampong Bencoolen (also spelt as Campong Bencoolen), in which it was located. The old kampong spanned Bencoolen Street, Waterloo Street, Prinsep Street, Middle Road and Albert Street.

The Bencoolen Muslims built the original attap Bengkali Mosque, or Masjid Bencoolen, between 1825 and 1828. This mosque was replaced in 1845 by a permanent version built by an Arab merchant, Syed Omar bin Aljunied. This version stands to this day and is just located beside Hotel Mi.

The Bencoolen area gained attention in 2017 with the opening of the deepest MRT station in Singapore, located 43 meters below street level.

Now, let’s move on to some hidden gems in Bencoolen itself!

1. Plaza Singapura
2. GR.iD Mall
3. National Museum of Singapore
4. Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple
5. Chjimes
7. Putra Minang Restaurant

Local Places of Interest
Bukit Timah Railway Station

Head on down and relive the golden age of rail travel with your own eyes, as the building itself has been repurposed as a heritage gallery. Here, you can learn more about the history of the Rail Corridor and Bukit Timah Railway Station, which was built in 1932 and operated up until the early 90s.

Some original architectural elements of the railway station, such as the track switching levers and ticketing booth, have also been refurbished back to their original glory.

Getting there
By MRT: King Albert Park (DT6)
Take Exit A. Upon exiting the MRT station, turn left and walk along Bukit Timah Road for 5 minutes. You will be greeted by a landscaped entrance point to lead you into the Rail Corridor.

By Bus:
67, 74, 77, 151, 154, 157, 170, 174, 852, 961, 961M, 970 (Bus stop ID: 42051)
Alight at King Albert Park MRT Station, along Bukit Timah Road.

Park opening hours: 24/7
However, as it is an important ecological corridor, the Rail Corridor is not lit at night to facilitate nocturnal wildlife movement. Lighting is only provided at certain access points, essential walking paths and benches leading to the public restrooms and Bukit Timah Railway Station building and Railway Staff Quarters.

What To Bring?
Take along your water bottles, sunscreen, insect repellent, tissues, and plastic bags for your trash will also come in handy. Bring binoculars if you're into wildlife observation. Wear comfortable clothes in neutral colours (long pants, long sleeves and a cap), and put on comfortable walking shoes.

Stay in shelters and observation hides during a thunderstorm. Do bring ponchos or umbrellas in the event of wet weather!

What To Do At Bukit Timah Railway Station?
Railway Staff Quarters: The conserved Railway Staff Quarters is a former staff housing block which has been repurposed into a café called ‘1932 STORY' with a rustic, relaxed ambience. Key architectural elements of the building were also restored, and improvements were made to make the building more accessible.

Kampung Garden / Herb and Spice Garden: Check out the ornamental shrubs and flowers iconic to Singapore’s 1960s landscape in the Kampung Garden. They include the Bunga Raya (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis), Peacock Flower (Caesalpinia pulcherrima), and the Arabian Jasmine (Jasminum sambac ‘Arabian Nights’). The Herb and Spice Garden showcases plants like Siamese Ginger (Zingiber officinale), Laksa Leaf (Persicaria odorata) and Cili Padi (Capsicum frutescens) that were commonly used for homecooked dishes.

Yard shelter: A new sheltered Yard serves as a rest area and gathering point, with public restrooms that simulate rustic toilets found in the old days. The Yard also features an educational board that shares with visitors the history of the railway.
