Message from our
Chief Executive Officer

Dear Colleagues,

There is still much uncertainty in the tourism and hotel industry, and we are not expecting the full opening of international borders anytime this year. We are monitoring the situation very closely with prudent management of our cashflow, risk and investment.

However, the company certainly recognises all your contributions, especially those in the front-line team. I am pleased to announce that the company has approved bonus and increment to pre-Covid levels for most of our colleagues. HR will announce this by email in the next few days. I am heartened and thankful that the leadership team has sacrificed much of their own bonus and forgo all increment in 2022 to stand in solidarity with me and all of you.

I trust that everyone will continue to step up and stay align with our WWH Core Values - Teamwork, Respect, Integrity, Commitment and Accountability so that we can emerge stronger.

Once again, I thank all of you for your contributions and please stay safe.

Warm Regards,

Carolyn Choo

What interesting fact about yourself that most of your colleagues are not aware of?
When I was at my first job, my ex-colleagues made fun of me as I could not speak, read or write in English. That sparked and fueled my determination to improve myself by taking night classes and accounting courses. It was not easy then but looking back, perhaps I need to thank them for "spurring me on", to where I am today.

Please share 1 proudest moment or memory?
In 1980, I was offered a job at Goodwood Park Hotel. Since it was my first time in Orchard Road and not knowing the location of the hotel, I actually took a taxi from CK Tang (now Singapore Marriot Tang Plaza) to Goodwood Park Hotel, which is physically less than 5 mins walk. There, I met with the love of my life.

Who do you admire most and why?
Mr Lee Kuan Yew, our Nation's founding father. What Singapore is now, is a manifestation of Mr. Lee's vision and deeds, which I am always very thankful for.

What drives you / what motivates you?
I love my work and adore my team. Daily, I affirm my role in making a meaningful difference which gives me a purpose to wake up and go at it again. I also derive great personal satisfaction in developing team members.

Your hobbies?
Used to like badminton and tennis when young. With age, a friendly game of mahjong is what keeps the ticker on pace. After the pandemic, I look forward to resume ticking off places on my bucket list.

What interesting fact about yourself that most of your colleagues are not aware of?
I am actually quite good in masking myself, controlling my temper, when I feel down, I will not show it to my colleagues, not to affect others. Most of the time, my colleagues always see my smiling face.

Please share 1 proudest moment or memory?
I am from Sabah Malaysia, working as a housekeeping in Hotel 81 and it is my first job in Singapore, until now, and still counting since 1st Oct 1998. Over the past 23 years, I have formed my family, I have 2 lovely daughters, have our own roof at JB Malaysia. Working within this strong and growing company, I proudly told my wife not to work, just focus on our family and kids.

Who do you admire most and why?
In my life, the person that I admire the most is my late father. He was the sole breadwinner in a household of 7 people. He had set a very good example to me on parenting and taking care of family. He was a village chief in a village in Sandakan Sabah, he was very active in doing charity, always reaching out to people who are in need, donating material to build new bridge or repair damaged bridge. Not only do I admire my father, but also the people from Sandakan!

What drives you / what motivates you?
My family, my daughter's education and future are definitely my biggest motivation. I have been working night shift for more than 10 years, and I live in JB (pre-Covid), working 12 hours a day and travelling between JB and Singapore daily is no joke, really tough! Whenever I feel down and tired, I think of them, I will be motivated to keep fighting.

Your hobbies?
I like drawing and Art & Craft a lot, my daughter always asked me to assist them in their drawing and art & craft work. During my off day, I always accompany my wife go shopping or food hunting during family outings.

Hotel Laundry

When did the Hotel Laundry started it operations?
Worldwide Hotels Hotel Laundry started Operations in 15 June 2007. In the beginning we had 1 Tunnel (click here to know more about Tunnel), 4 Dryers, 2 Ironer Infeeds, 2 Towel Folder machines, 2 Standalone Washers and 2 Standalone Dryers.

Today, we have almost doubled in size. By next year we will add another Tunnel, Towel Folder, and an upgraded Ironer.

Explain what our colleagues do daily at the laundry plant?
In the Laundry Plant we have many departments which consist of: Delivery, Sorting, Tunnel Loading (Dirty Linens), Tunnel Unloading (Fresh Linens), Pillowcases, Ironer Infeed, Towel Folding, Bathmat Folding. Our WWH Laundry Truck collects dirty linens from the Hotels twice a day between 5.30am to 2.00pm & 2.30pm to 10.00pm
  • Sorting Department: The Operator Sorter will sort out the individual hotel linens.
  • All sorted linens will be pushed to the Tunnel for loading in.
  • Soiled linens or special wash linens will be direct push to Standalone Washer Extractor for special washing.
  • Tunnel takes 90 sec through 12 compartment cycle wash.
  • After linens are pressed, it will be transferred automatically by Shuttle to Dryer for Drying (Towel - 22min, Bedsheets - 2 min, Bathmat - 24 min).
  • Fresh linens will be transferred to different department for Operator to process the production.
  • Group Leader will WhatsApp message on the quantity of fresh lines to be delivered to individual hotels based on the dirty linens and cages collected.
What did you or the colleagues do to ensure that all linens are delivered to the hotel on time?
We work together as a team in order to expedite the processes listed above on a very tight schedule.

Getting To Know Your Neighbourhood - Little India

Our colleague, John Seah, has gone round Little India to show us some hidden gems but first, did you know?...

Little India’s streets are named after its 19th-century residents: Dunlop Street, for an European family, Belilios Lane, for cattle importer I.R. Belilios, and Campbell Lane for British soldier Sir Colin Campbell.

You may not know that Little India once had a racecourse, cattle herders and brick kilns. But while these places and people are gone, time stands still in pockets of this historic district. Olden-day trades sit next to newer businesses: flower-garland vendors, modern eateries, boutique hotels, as well as arts groups.

Little India today is one of Singapore’s most vibrant districts. As you walk down Serangoon Road and neighbouring streets, explore their mix of Hindu and Chinese temples, mosques and churches.

Now, let’s move on to some hidden gems found within Little India itself!

1. Indian Heritage Centre
2. Former House of Tan Teng Niah
3. Mustafa Centre
4. The Malayan Council (Halal)
5. Meatsmith Little India

Tips For A Healthy Heart

Tip #1
Stick To A Healthy Diet

This means eating a well-balanced meal with daily servings of fruits and vegetables as well as portions of fish. Avoid unhealthy food choices such as fast food, as this is high in fat and cholesterol. Sweetened drinks are also unhealthy because of their high sugar content.

Tip #2
Exercise

Aim to walk 10,000 steps a day, and engage in 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity per week (or 30 minutes daily). If you’re short of time, try to incorporate physical activity into your daily routine, such as climbing the stairs instead of taking the lift.

Tip #3
Maintain A Healthy Weight

If you are overweight or obese, visceral fat may be present in and around your body tissues. So keep to an optimum weight and BMI.

Tip #4
Don’t Smoke

Keep yourself tobacco-free and you will drastically reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke.

Tip #5
Limit Alcohol Consumption

Don’t drink more than one to two glasses a day.
