Message from our
Chief Executive Officer

Dear Colleagues,

I am increasingly optimistic that we can gradually return to normalcy soon. Our government has ramped up vaccinations and Singapore is on track to having two-thirds of the population fully vaccinated by National Day. The government has announced that we will be prepared to live with COVID-19 managed like the common flu.

The company’s current focus is to better engage our people and enhance process productivity to emerge stronger from this pandemic. We are reviewing our HR policies so that we can resume pre-COVID staff remuneration benefits to most of our colleagues especially those in the front-line team from Operations, Maintenance and Laundry. Hopefully, we have positive news to announce by end of Q3!

Please continue to adhere stringently to all safe management measures and stay safe for our families and colleagues.

Warm Regards,

Carolyn Choo

Name Details
Ms. Cindy Cindy is a team player who takes initiative and discharges her role with finesse. Most significantly, her role as an ADOS was recognised she went beyond her call of duty to visit hotels on the weekends to ensure a pleasant and smooth group check-ins for our corporate clients. In addition, Cindy had also volunteered to be on SMM duty for Hotel Boss on Christmas Eve in year 2020. To ensure pleasant and smooth group check-ins for our corporate clients, she had gone the extra mile in managing guests’ demands and in meeting guests’ expectation.
Ms. Vivian As an SFOE, Vivian had exhibited great initiative when she stepped up to assist the housekeeping team in room cleaning / general area cleaning & maintenance when the hotel was down on manpower. Vivian had also stepped forward to render her assistance and support to our laundry delivery team in the loading the laundry cages to the delivery truck. Her execution of work above and beyond her scope of duties is admirable and deeply appreciated.
Mr. Alvin Alvin had displayed courage and vigilance when he assisted in evacuating guests and firefighting during a fire outbreak at 11pm on 5 May 2021 at Hotel 81 Selegie. His instinctiveness to ensure guest safety and the courage to deploy the use of a fire extinguisher and fire-fight before the arrival of SCDF is highly commendable, especially so when he had risked his life for the well-being of our guests, our staff and the assets of the company. Alvin was conveyed to the hospital for observation and was certified fit to be discharged on the very next day.
Ms. Kamariah Kamariah discharged her duties diligently as a Guest Service Support throughout her attachment to Hotel Mi. In times of need, Kamariah exhibited great initiative and excellent team spirit by stepping forward to support her team in covering some housekeeping duties that are beyond her scope of work in addition to delivering meals to the guests on PSHN and PUQ. She had also stayed beyond her working hours to complete tasks that have been assigned to her team.
Mr. Abu Muhammad (Abu) is a detail-oriented SFOE who also serves as a Housekeeping Supervisor in V Hotel Bencoolen. He exhibits excellent coordination and leadership qualities, and had gone beyond his call of duty to manage guests’ expectations, hotel HK inventory, pest control, and SMM & compliance matters. He had also driven and motivated his Housekeeping team throughout the GQF & SHN period. During the month of Ramadan, Muhammad had, at his own expense, ordered food for his team and stayed beyond his shift to facilitate and join his Muslim colleagues for break fast together.

Fire Fighting at Hotel 81 Selegie

On 5 May 2021, Alvin, our Front Office colleague at Hotel 81 Selegie, had bravely put out a fire in one of the guestrooms. He was warded overnight at Tan Tock Seng Hospital for observation from smoke inhalation and was discharged the following day.

After the incident, SCDF followed up with their investigation and provided advice on how using the fire hose reel would be more effective than that of a fire extinguisher. Another important reminder was that the correct immediate response to fire emergencies will always be about prioritising the saving of lives and thereafter minimising damage to property. Our Hotel Managers are to do periodic briefings to ensure all on property are aware of the necessary emergency procedures.

On behalf of the Management, we applaud Alvin for his bravery and quick thinking on successfully putting the fire out.

General Manager – Hotel Mi

What interesting fact about yourself that most of your colleagues are not aware of? What made you drop Law to pursue a career in the Hotel / Hospitality industry?
While in Japan, I’d originally majored in Law and Politics however, as soon as I’d discovered Hospitality, I decided to make a switch. Till today, the Hospitality industry continues to fascinate me and I am thankful that I am able to give my best in my work which is also an area of great professional interest to me.

Please share 1 proudest moment or memory?
Though my career began in a hotel located in a small city in Japan, I quickly became very motivated to want to establish a firm foundation within Hospitality and so, took 3 years to prepare myself for admission into one of the Hotel Management schools in Switzerland where the language of instruction was French and not English.

This was a particularly fond memory because communication was challenging however, I was able to overcome the language barrier with the support of my ex-colleagues. I am still in touch with some of them who are based in Switzerland and will definitely visit should I make a trip there.

Who do you admire most and why?
This accolade goes to one of my ex-bosses whom I worked with at a resort hotel in Bali back in 2008. After arriving in Bali and having little prior experience in managing full hotel operations, I was given this opportunity in my very first overseas assignment to head the hotel opening with the local team in Bali for a period of 2 – 6 months.

Though this ex-boss had suddenly left to return to Singapore in a short 2 days after arrival, I felt fortunate to have been given this much trust to hold the fort and see things through which, have been pivotal in shaping my work ethic today.

What drives you / what motivates you?
I would like to groom more people and with my experience, I wish to contribute to the hotel that I am working for.

Your hobbies?
I am a hard core fan of FC Barcelona. My son is also learning soccer in his soccer academy and I hope he can play better one day!

Laundry Operations Manager - Hotel 81 Laundry
Note: Some photos are taken prior to COVID-19

What interesting fact about yourself that most of your colleagues are not aware of?
I have a pretty carefree personality.

When I joined the Group in 1996, I’d actually started out as a Front Office staff and after a decade, was asked by Chairman Mr Choo to manage the Laundry Plant in Tuas beginning in 2007.

I appreciate the trust given by Mr Choo such that I’d turned down an offer by another laundry company which took place about 5 years ago.

Though laundry operations come with many challenges, I find that there is still much to learn.

Please share 1 proudest moment or memory?
I am exceptionally fond of my wife, Florence, and I am very blessed with 5 sons that I wish to see grow up healthy and well. I am certainly proud of having a good family.

Who do you admire most and why?
I admire Chairman Mr Choo who inspired me to be even more hardworking and to be attentive to the staff under my care.

What drives you / what motivates you?
I am highly motivated by the level of trust given to me by my superiors and the amount of family support I have from my family.

Your hobbies?
I enjoy travelling, being exposed to other cultures and enjoying other types of local food.

Mother’s Day Celebration At Hotels Boss

Even when you are miles away from your children, it will never change the fact that you’re a mother. Mothers’ day falls on 9 May this year and just like many of our foreigner friends, these mothers who were staying at Hotel Boss were not able to return home due to the current situation. However, we hoped that we managed to light them up by gifting them a stalk of rose to celebrate Mothers’ Day with them.

Getting To Know Your Neighbourhood - Chinatown

Our colleague, Wynne, has gone round Chinatown to show us some hidden gems but first, did you know?...

Chinatown is an estate located largely in the Outram area in the Central Region of Singapore. In his 1822 master Town Plan, Sir Stamford Raffles allocated the whole area west of the Singapore River for a Chinese settlement known as the Chinese Campong (kampong in Malay means “village”), envisaging that the Chinese would form the bulk of future town dwellers. Singapore, the new land of opportunity then, had attracted many immigrants from China, who expanded the original boundaries of this economically and culturally vibrant, self-contained town.

Today, Chinatown is Singapore’s largest Historic District, and an important and unique ethnic quarter Singaporeans fondly call “our Chinatown”.

Now, let’s move on to some hidden gems found within Chinatown itself!

2. Buddha Tooth Relic Temple & Museum 佛牙寺
3. Singapore Musical Box Museum
