What interesting fact about yourself that most of your colleagues are not aware of?
I shoot wedding photography during the weekends on my free time and I love travelling and exploring new places!

Please share 1 proudest moment or memory?
If you're a football fan, you will know how much it means to watch your favourite football team LIVE at their stadium. I have been to Anfield Stadium in UK to watch Liverpool football club live.

Whom do you admire most and why?
It has to be my parents!

They have always been my pillar of support, tolerating my antics up till now. Sometimes, I wonder if I will ever be as tolerant as them in the near future, if I were ever to start a family of my own.

What drives you / what motivates you?
Exploring remote places in foreign countries. I have been to Faroe Islands and Iceland.

Being in an unknown remote island makes me feel alive and free!

Your hobbies?
Other than photography, I love gaming during my free time.

What interesting fact about yourself that most of your colleagues are not aware of?
I am a musician in a Methodist church at Commonwealth. I play the bass guitar and drums for the church group.

Please share 1 proudest moment or memory?
At one point of time, there was an event / festival for the church. There were over a thousand attendees and our band is playing. It was my first time performing for such a huge audience and I was really nervous. I plucked up the courage, played the bass guitar and the audience loved it! Seeing their applause at our performance was a wonderful moment to remember.

Who do you admire most and why?
A member in the church group is the person I admired the most. He has a big heart, extremely generous and loves spending time with friends. He is very helpful and approachable. The surprising thing is that, you don't even need to tell him if you have a problem, as he can sense it from your body language and will immediately sit down with you to listen to your problems.

What drives you / what motivates you?
I have always a passion for music. Music was the reason I joined the church in the first place, and I have served the church for more than 20 years. Seeing people appreciate my music brings me contentment and it is something I want to be a part of in a long run.

Your hobbies?
Other than music, I love organizing gatherings, watching movies with my church friends and having peaceful and relaxing bonding sessions.

Getting To Know Your Neighbourhood - Bugis

Our colleague, Hanny, has gone round Bugis to show us some hidden gems but first, did you know?...

Bugis (Kampong Bugis in Malay) is an area in Singapore that covers Bugis Street now located within the Bugis Junction shopping mall. Bugis Street was renowned internationally from the 1950s to the 1980s for its nightly gathering of transvestites and transsexuals, a phenomenon that made it one of Singapore's most notable destinations for foreign visitors during that period.

In the mid-1980s, Bugis Street underwent major urban redevelopment into a retail complex of modern shopping malls, restaurants and nightspots mixed with regulated back-alley roadside vendors. Underground digging to construct the Bugis MRT Station prior to that also caused the upheaval and termination of the nightly transgender sex bazaar culture, marking the end of a colorful and unique era in Singapore's history.

Today, the original Bugis Street is now a cobblestoned, relatively wide avenue sandwiched between the buildings of the Bugis Junction shopping complex. On the other hand, the lane presently touted as "Bugis Street" by the Singapore Tourist Promotion Board is actually developed from New Bugis Street, formerly Albert Street, and is billed as "the largest street-shopping location in Singapore".

Now, let’s move on to some hidden gems found within Bugis itself!

    1. Sultan Mosque
    2. Mint Museum Of Toy
    3. CHIJMES
    4. Bugis Street
    5. Liang Seah Street
    6. Wanderlost Lounge (Halal)

    Local Places of Interest
    Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve

Located in the far north-western area of Singapore lies Singapore’s first ASEAN Heritage Park, a unique wildlife haven. The entire reserve covers a distance of 3,700 meters, consisting of coastal areas, forest trails, mid-canopy walks and migratory bird trails.

It was recognised as a site of international importance for migratory birds and awarded a certificate by Wetlands International, marking the reserve's formal entry into the East Asian Australasian Shorebird Site Network. Trek through this ecological jewel’s many trails and discover its native inhabitants such as mudskippers, crabs, shellfish, water snakes, birds, spiders, monitor lizards and otters. Admire the beauty of resident birds such as herons, kingfishers and sunbirds.

    Getting there
This new extension is situated along Kranji Way, and is easily accessible by public transport, bringing Sungei Buloh even closer to the public.

By Bus (Mondays to Saturdays): Board SMRT Bus 925 from Kranji MRT Station. Alight at Kranji Reservoir Carpark B. Walk across the road to the Visitor Centre.

By Bus (Sundays and Public Holidays): Board SMRT Bus 925M from Kranji MRT Station. The bus stops at the Wetland Centre entrance. Please note that SMRT Bus 925M operates only from Woodlands Interchange on Sundays and Public Holidays.

Park opening hours: 7 am to 7 pm (Last entry: 6:30pm)

    What To Bring?
Take along your own water bottles, sunscreen, insect repellent, tissues and plastic bags for your trash will also come in handy. Bring binoculars if you’re into wildlife observation. Dress in comfortable clothes in neutral colours (long pants, long sleeves and cap), and put on comfortable walking shoes.

Stay in shelters and observation hides during thunderstorm. Do bring ponchos or umbrellas in the event of wet weather!

What To Do At Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve?
Catch a glimpse of the wildlife: As the Wetland Reserve is home to a rich diversity of native wildlife, there could be encounters with creatures such as otters, wild boars, bats, snakes, and even a crocodile! Fret not, many wild animals would much rather not encounter us humans, and would only attack when provoked.

Bird Watching: The reserve is the perfect place for bird watching. Resident birds: Herons, bitterns, kingfishers, sunbirds and pigeons. This is also a popular stopover for migratory birds during September to March.

However do take note on the birdwatcher's code:
    - Do not frighten the birds.
    - Leave nesting birds alone.
Birdwatching at the reserve requires: patience, an eye for detail, and a good pair of binoculars!

Guided Walks: For expert guidance, learn and explore with experienced guides by joining the free guided walks that are conducted at the reserve every weekend. Understand what’s in the mangrove and what lives in the water edges Sungei Buloh. Registration is required.

Nature Photography: Stroll along the trails and boardwalk to observe the wildlife with a careful eye. You might just be able to capture a few good shots!
